Died in 1910 Rousseau was a self taught artist. Incredibly his most recognised work & subject is the jungle, however he had never actually travelled beyond France. During his time in the army he listened to the accounts of surviving soldiers who served in the French expedition to Mexico, learning about their tropical surroundings. Illustrations & books also inspired his art & aswell as painting the jungle he also depicted cities & suburbs. Rousseau was subject to much ridicule from many artists due to his lack of tutoring & believed he didn't know what he was doing. However his dedication to be a professional, appreciated artist & his own style showed his genius. After exhibiting with Henri Matisse, his work became associated with Les Fauves, Fauvism, colourful, modern art using simplified lines. Rousseau was a Post Impressionist artist, a self taught genius whose work was admired by & inspired many artists included Pablo Picasso. Since his death his artwork has been exhibited worldwide & his quality of work & influence on generations of artists widely recognised. |
