1908 Munch´s anxiety lead to his need for therapy,
which saw a change in his personality.

artistic style.

1930's & 40's Nazi's labelled his work as
'degenerate'(un-german or Jewish). All of his work
was removed from the German museums much to the
upset of Munch.

1944 He died after spending his last years in his
studio at Ekly Estate,Oslo.

Edvard Munch was a symbolist painter, printmaker
and expressionist. Although inspired by the Post
Impressionists, his content was symbolic,
focussing on the state of mind not the subjects
external features & reality.

Munch created atmospheric art to express the
emotional content of his pieces. To add to the
dramatic effect he favored a minimal backdrop so
the positioning of his figures would express their
psychological state in an almost theatrical way,
evoking controversy.

Perhaps some of his most recognised work is from
the Frieze of Life A Poem about Life,Love & Death.
The atmospheric quality of his artwork was
dominant, reflecting his own psychological state &
the dramatic focus of sorrow in death.

Many of his works reflected his upbringing, his
pessimistic view of life & love & his turbulent
relationship with it.

Edvard Munch left over a 1000 paintings, 15000
prints, 4000 drawings & watercolours as well as
sculptures. Two versions of his most famous work
'The Scream' have been stolen, eventually to be
recovered & in 2006 a wood cut, Two People.The
Lonely Ones (below), set the highest selling
record of his prints bought at $1,270,000.
