1954 Died, it is speculated whether her death was
the cause of an accidental or non accidental
overdose.

Frida Kahlo painted many self portraits having
said "I am the subject I know best".
Her work was influenced by the traditional
Mexican culture, the use of bright colours &
dramatic symbolism reflects this. Some of her
images include Christian influences aswell as
Aztec.

Being the victim of a horrific accident was the
turning point in her life. To occupy her time
during her many months being bed ridden painting
became an important factor in her life. Kahlo was
also influenced by Diego Rivera the Mexican
muralist whom she later married.

Symbolism in her portraits reflected the physical
and mentals wounds that tormented her & the
monkey, a Mexican symbol for lust, to Kahlo
represented protection & nurturing.

Frida Kahlo's work as been described by some as
fantasy or dreams but Kahlo herself made the
point that she painted what was her own reality
and the pain that she had endured.

Although appreciated as an artist during her life
people became more aware of her work during the
1970's. In the 1980's Neomexicanismo became
famous along with Kahlo.

Kahlo was the subject of many best selling, world
wide biographies and even films.
In 2002 the movie Frida delivered her work to a
brand new audience & in 2006 her painting 'The
Roots' became the highest selling work of a Latin
American artist & sold for $5,600,000.

Her works are now on display at the Frida Kahlo
museum La Casa Azul, the little blue house that
