Baroque
Baroque is the 17th century artistic movement in
Rome that was influenced by Western culture.

Baroque qualities are clearly visible in the arts,
in paintings,sculptures,architecture,the
theatre, literature & music giving drama and
grandeur to that which it influenced.

Baroque art was very detailed yet simple with less
realistic facial features painted in a style so as
to evoke a sense of awe. All forms of art in the
Baroque period influenced each other, as a result
music and literature also became more dramatic,
the mannerist traits in theatre were replaced by
the drama and suspense of opera, gestures in
paintings became bigger, more obvious as in
operatics and the figurative poses were dependant
on the tension between characters (known as
contrapposto).

Baroque sculptures were more dynamic in movement
and became light coverings and fountains.
Architecture and decoration became much more bold
and voluminous, with interiors having monumental
focal points such as grand staircases, state
apartments and rooms with rich interiors which
were copied in aristocratic residences.

Baroque was widely encouraged by the Roman
Catholic Church to communicate religious themes.
Many art historians believe that the Baroque
movement began as a result of the reformation, to
spread the word of the Roman Catholic Church as
well as public demand for new art.

In the 18th century the Baroque style became less
dramatic and was eventually superseded by the more
decorative Rococo style, however the architecture
was popular until the late 18th century and the
beginnings of neo-classicism.
