Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist who's
primary but not only subject was the female body.
Klimt started his professional career painting
interior murals, however after the death of his
father & brother his artistic style changed from
being conventional to personal.

He was one of the founding members of Vienna
Secessionists, a group aimed at young artists,
helping to exhibit their art. The group welcomed,
respected and valued all artistic styles

Klimt was also subject to criticism for his
sometimes overtly sexual & pornographic themes.
In many of his more erotic pieces he cleverly
used shapes and decoration to disguise the sexual
content.

Throughout what is known as Klimt's Golden Phase
he created elegant works of art, one of his most
famous being The Kiss

The recurring theme of portraying dominant women
using gold leaf & colour decoration was inspired
by his diverse influences ranging from the
Egyptians to the Byzantine era.

Gustav Klimt was devoted to art, family & the
secessionist movement & produced what is
reportedly the most expensive artwork sold at
auction, Adele Bloch-Bauer I, for an unbelievable
$135,000,000.
