A Brief History 1937 Born in Bradford,West Yorkshire 1948 Won scholarship to Bradford Grammar School 1953 Enrolled at Bradford College of Art 1959 Attended the Royal College of Arts in London 1963 Visited New York & met Andy Warhol 1964 Invited to teach at the University of Iowa & hosted 1st exhibition in New York with rave reviews 1965 Returned from London to America to teach at the University of Colorado ,eventually settling in LA & created a series of prints entitled 'A Hollywood Collection' with Ken Tyler 1970-71 Painted Mr & Mrs Clark & Percy,a painting of Celia Birtwell & then husband,fashion designer Ossie Clark. One of the most popular paintings in the Tate Gallery 1974 Subject of a film named after one of his paintings 'A Bigger Splash'. 1985 Commissioned to design the cover & pages of the French Vogue. He was also commissioned to draw with the computer programme Quantel Paintbox, which was filmed by the BBC. 1997 Made a Companion of Honour, a reward & recognition for his contribution to the arts 2006 'The Splash' sold at a record price for a Hockney Painting, ₤2,600,000. London's National Portrait Gallery also exhibited his work consisting of his early pieces through to 2005 2007 At 15ft x 40ft & made up of 50 canvases, Hockney's largest piece, 'Bigger Trees Near Water', was exhibited at the annual Summer Exhibition of the Royal Academy |
| Although associated with British Pop Art, Hockney is most well known for his natural style & use of vibrant colours. He experimented with various mediums including lithography. Due to his interest into the exploration of human vision,after taking thousands of photographs he begin to piece these together creating an effect similar to cubism, inspired by Picasso. Many of his works are of his surroundings in California & were also inspired by loved ones. Ironically his devotion to art lead to the break up of one of his most cherished relationships. David Hockney is appreciated worldwide & after receiving much praise & success throughout his career, he is considered to be one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. |
